Sarough Rugs, Telltale Sign of Local Artistic Talent
One of the most exquisite Sarough rugs is now preserved in Reza Shah’s former sleeping room in the Sabz Palace. Sarough is the name of the best rugs woven in Arak, the capital of the central province of Markazi.
. The rug held in this room has plain ecoinçon and medallion patterns on it, delicately woven with woolen woofs.
The Iranian Sarough rug was woven in Sarough region, in western Farahan and is a famous rug in the international markets. Meanwhile, 37 rugs woven in Farahan and Sarough of Arak are now preserved in the Iranian Carpet Museum, 16 of which are especially of Sarogh type. They mostly belong to Nassereddin Shah of Qajar era.
Flowery patterns of the background, like four, five, and six-leaf flowers, roses, and arabesque patterns decorated with Cathay flowers, give a special beauty to them. The predominant colors, used in this type of rug, are red, dark blue, and a little green and beige.
